Does It Really Matter? By Amaya Fox
Recently some students of Premier Charter School have talked about the issues regarding fashion trends. This generation is so obsessed with name brand clothing it’s ridiculous. Many kids have spoke upon this everyday problem that they witness and/or face. Kids don’t understand what they’re actually doing. They don’t think that it’s hurtful. Although, by bragging about your name brand clothing you have you’re also making others think upon what they don’t have.
Nowadays teenagers are more worried about their clothes than other relevant things going on. Most teens want the newest jordans. Others want Nike socks. Some kids even ask for $100 jeans like True Religion Jeans Or Miss Me’s. The question is why though. Most kids won’t admit to it, but the most common reason for wanting these things are to fit in. Some parents will go out and buy their kid unimportant name brand things if they really want it.
In this generation kids feel like they need to own name brand clothing. If you don’t you get teased about it, laughed at, and even talked about. It’s not fair that kids get talked about and laughed at because of what kind of clothes they wear. It’s actually really disappointing for a parent to know that people are going to talk about your child based on what he/she wears.
Name brands are just the half of it! Kids get degraded for wearing pants that are “too short”. Or because they don’t own a certain type of shoe. Even if their shirt has a hole in it. Its crazy how kids can always find something to talk about. It’s mind blowing how kids think designers are actually important.
On social media websites people love to show off the designers they own. Some people show off jeans, shirts, purses, hats and even belts! People who don’t wear as much or any name brand get called names like ‘Broke’ and ‘Dirty’. How can someone be dirty based on the brand of their clothes? Maybe people can’t afford it, maybe people chose to spend their money wisely, or maybe they don’t think they’re important.
Name brand clothes have no significance at all to everyday life. Designers won’t help you get a job. They won’t help you get A’s in school. They won’t help you get into a good college. Nor will they help you achieve anything in the real world. They’re nice to have but not as important as people make them seem.
11 year old Fardosa Aden explained how a situation involving this issue happened in her class meeting. A girl in her class was running the class meeting & the question she asked everyone was, what’s everyones’ favorite designer. Fardosa said that only 2 out of 23 people had an answer. The girl who was running the meeting laughed and said, “ I guess y’all can’t afford them if you don’t got a favorite.” This goes to show how kids actually laugh at others because of something as petty as name brand clothing.
14 year old Kane Decker decided to speak upon the issue and how he feels on name brands. He said “ I don’t get why people want to have Nike socks. I mean they’re just socks with a symbol that looks like a checkmark. What’s so cool about that?” A lot of kids agree with him and think it’s pointless to have things such as Nike socks when you can just go and get a pair of regular socks a lot cheaper. He also said “ Designer jeans are stupid too, what’s the point of paying more than $100 on a pair of pants, when you can get a pair for a lot less money?”
The way that kids criticize each other is like how whites acted towards blacks during segregation times. Both acts are similar because people are putting down others on small and unimportant reasoning. Its hurtful to yourself and especially to the people getting victimized. People need to realize it doesn’t matter what you wear, its your attitude that shapes who you are!
