The labeling of Muslims is a serious issue in our society and needs to be stopped. America prides itself for being a place where everyone is equal, regardless of race or faith. However, if Muslims continue to be discriminated, condemned, fired from jobs, and killed because of their appearances and faith, then the Americans are just going against their constitutional beliefs. We need to change this fear and hatred towards Muslims to toleration and respect. We shouldn't have a repeat of history, we should've already learned about it during World War II. Like how the Germans treated the Jews, the Americans are doing it the same for Muslims, but not as severe.
Ever since the 9/11 attack, thousands of Americans have labeled Muslims as terrorists and threats. Much has changed since then. We have added more security in airports, including a full body scanner, and most of all, there has been an increase in airport security checks towards Muslims. Acts have been passed by Congress weeks after the attack, including a Patriot Act. This act allowed an expansion of Federal Officials powers, authorizing them to keep tabs on personal information, from credit cards to cell phone calls. More anti-Islamic violence in America jumped from 28 attacks in 2000 to 481 attacks in 2001.
The discrimination has grown ever since the Boston bombing and ISIS invading Syria and Iraq. There are about 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, enough to populate a nation! Maybe fifty of them are terrorists, maybe a hundred, or a thousand! But why should the rest of Muslims suffer through the wrong ideas other people have? There is always going to be dangerous and immoral people in different groups, whether it’s defined by race, religion or age. There isn't going to be more of them in Islam. A student from eighth grade says,”It’s not fair to me, to all the other Muslims, who do nothing wrong, but still hear and see these threats thrown at us.”
In fact, there is a name for all this. It’s called Islamophobia, ‘a term for prejudice against, hatred towards or fear of Muslims.’ Many Americans have this, when there is no need to. Religion should bring people together, not push them away. We should clear our minds from the hatred and fear and live with peace with one another.
