Social Media

Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr have evovled over the years. Before all the other sites came along, Facebook was the dominant social site. About 3 years ago, people used Facebook for an outlet to connect and share with the people around them. This site was also used by mostly adults, not children or teenagers. Currently, it is used by mostly the opposite. Today, social media is a site for kids and teengers to vent all of their personal feelings and opinions and post little things that don’t matter for the sake of attention. “It’s just so hard to find someone to take seriously on social media these days,” says a frequent Facebook user for about 2 years. They also like to bo very disrespectful to people online without remorse. Some kids may harrass, or “troll” anybody online for no reason at all. But some people would argue that the kids are just having fun and not doing any harm.

Some people may argue that kids are fine on social media websites. They believe that what ever kids post should not be taken seriously and be compared with a grain of salt. They also believe that since these social media websites usually have an age requirement of 13, people should not get mad when kids are spotted on social media websites. Another thing they argue is that what ever these kids are posting is just them expressing themselves in their own special way. “I like Instagram because I get to express my feelings in a format which my friends are on,” says a 15 year old who frequents Instagram often.

Altohugh there are many opinions on the topic, there should be a boundary between meaningful posting and ridiculous nonsense. And parents need to moderate what their kids are posting to make sure that they are not posting anything inappropriate or rude. Kids may have freedoms, but put them on a leash when it comes to social media because someone online could hurt their feelings very badly. In conclusion, kids should be mindful of what they post and parents should keep an eye on what their kid posts.
